Founded in 1991 by corresponding member of ANAS, professor Salahaddin Khalilov, the university has been headed by Saadat Aliyeva since 2017.

A member of international exchange programs such as Erasmus +, Mevlana, DAAD, Azerbaijan University is the official Accredited Testing Center for the ECDL (European Computer Driving License) certification program in Azerbaijan, as well as PTE, which certifies English language skills at the international level. The International Dual Diploma Program is implemented at the University of Azerbaijan jointly with the Kharkiv National University of Radio Electronics of Ukraine.
