Director of the Institute of Geography of ANAS has died

Prominent geographer, laureate of the State Prize, President of the Azerbaijan Geographical Society, Director of the Institute of Geography named after academician HA Aliyev of ANAS, academician Ramiz Mammadov has died.

 

He died of a heart attack this morning at the age of 71.

 

It should be noted that Ramiz Mahmud oglu Mammadov was born on February 4, 1950 in Garajalar village of Gardabani region of the Republic of Georgia in an intellectual family. He graduated from high school in 1967, and in 1972 from the Physics Department of the Azerbaijan State University (now Baku State University). He began his scientific career in 1973 at the Center for Caspian Sea Problems of the Institute of Geography of the Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR.

 

In 1980-1985, the scientist worked as the head of the Caspian research station of the Azerbaijan Space Research and Production Union. In 1985, by the decision of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR, he continued his activity at the Institute of Geology, and in 1989 at the Institute of Geography. In 1991, he worked as the director of the Center for Caspian Sea Problems of the Institute of Geography, and in 1994 as the deputy director for scientific affairs of this institution. Since 2012, he was the director of the Institute of Geography named after academician HA Aliyev of ANAS. In 2001 he was a corresponding member of ANAS on the specialty "Geography", and since 2014 he was a full member of ANAS.
