Students of Oil and Gas Engineering and Geophysical Engineering of the Azerbaijan-French University (UFAZ) took part in a field experiment on sedimentology within the course "Geology of sedimentary basins and reservoirs" by Professor Matthew Schuster from the University of Strasbourg.

According to Tehsil.biz, they visited the geological deposits of the late Miocene (23 - 5.3 million) near the small village of Pirakashkul - the Maykop range - Islamdag.

Students observed the sedimentological and lithological properties of rocks represented by organically rich clays called "black shale". This rock complex is the source of all the oil and gas potential of the South Caspian Basin.

Students also studied Quaternary sediments created by an unknown Paleo river and modern deposits in a river valley near the village of Pirakashkul.
