World-famous Azerbaijani archaeologist Rauf Munchayev has died.

 

According to Tehsil.biz, this was reported to Report by the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of ANAS.

 

It was reported that Munchayev died in Moscow at the age of 93.

 

Rauf Magomedovich Munchayev was born on September 23, 1928 in Zagatala. In 1945-49 he studied at the Faculty of History of the Dagestan State Pedagogical Institute, in 1949-1953 at the graduate school of the Institute of Material Culture of the USSR Academy of Sciences (now the Institute of Archeology) in Moscow. In 1953 he defended his doctoral dissertation, in 1971 he defended his doctoral dissertation.

 

In the 1960s, Munchayev took part in archeological excavations in Afghanistan, Bulgaria, India and Mongolia. From 1969 to 2010, he was the leader of the first Soviet-Russian archeological expedition to study the monuments of ancient Mesopotamia. This expedition was in Iraq until 1985, and in Syria from 1988 to 2010 BC. He conducted archeological excavations at monuments of the VIII-III millennia.

 

For more than 20 years (1968-1991) R. Munchayev worked as the Deputy Director for Scientific Affairs of the Institute of Archeology of the Academy of Sciences of such a huge country as the USSR. In 1991-1994 he was the director of the Institute of Archeology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and in 1994-2003 he was the director of the institute.

 

World-famous archaeologist R. Munchayev has been awarded a number of prizes of the Russian Federation for his intense and productive scientific activity.
